UK Ocean Energy Review 2021

By Henry Jeffrey & Kristofer Grattan

The University of Edinburgh’s Policy and Innovation Group, in collaboration with Wave Energy Scotland, the Energy Technology Partnership, and Supergen ORE Hub, has released their UK Ocean Energy Review 2021. The report is an expansion of the UK chapter of the IEA-OES Annual Report 2021 and summarises the progress of wave, tidal stream and tidal range technology, markets and policy achieved by the UK in the last year.

2021 was a milestone year for the UK sector, with the introduction of a ring-fenced Contract for Difference for tidal energy, which sees tidal stream starting its journey to large scale predictable power generation in the UK. It also saw continuous innovative cross-border collaborations, deployment of state-of-the-art projects and offshore tests being undertaken for the wave and tidal energy sector.

Key findings

£20m of ring-fenced funding was made available for tidal stream projects through Contracts for Difference

£29.1m was spent in Wales on the development of the ocean energy industry

3 tidal stream devices were installed in the UK waters

7 wave energy projects were selected for the stage 1 of the Europewave PCP process
